Governments are making decisions on economic change, emerging technologies, climate and energy transitions, security and demographic pressures whose effects will be felt for decades. Yet political, budgetary and institutional cycles often reward short-term responses. This can shift costs and risks onto younger people and future generations, weaken trust and make it harder to sustain action across electoral cycles. Countries are responding in different ways. Governments and legislatures are testing parliamentary bodies, legal duties, foresight and anticipatory governance, participatory processes, financial mechanisms and new forms of youth and intergenerational representation. These approaches are at different stages, but together they offer practical evidence about how long-term considerations can influence decisions.

The New Alignment is an emerging coalition between countries, institutions and generations working to ensure that decisions made today are fairer to people across the life course and to generations yet to come. This session will connect countries already innovating, compare what is changing in practice and identify where collaboration could help these approaches become more durable and transferable. The event will inform The New Alignment Intergenerational Justice and Solidarity Working Group, a UCL Institute for Global Prosperity initiative established in advance of the United Kingdom's 2027 G20 Presidency. The Working Group is the mechanism for comparing evidence and developing practical recommendations. The discussion itself will centre on country experience and the contribution that the G20 and wider multilateral system could make.

Our Co-President Professor Henrietta Moore introduced the concept of Cognitive Taxation in her keynote speech at UNGA during the Global Brain Economy Summit 2026. One of the most overlooked consequences of insecure livelihoods is cognitive taxation. Uncertainty about income, housing, or basic needs places a constant demand on our attention, leaving less mental capacity for creativity, reflection, and long-term decision-making. If we want people to thrive, we need to think beyond economic security alone and consider the cognitive burden that insecurity imposes on everyday life. Brain capital isn’t just brain health plus brain skills. It’s the bandwidth people have left to use them. Watch the recording.

Government Economists for New Economic Systems (GENESYS) is an emerging platform for debating, experimenting, and discussing policy alternatives and the analytical approaches which underpin them embracing new economic thinking drawn from a range of disciplines. GENESYS is currently in a development stage as it builds its agenda and network. This seminar hosted by The New Alignment (TNA) at UCL Institute for Global Prosperity (IGP) and GENESYS, brings together leading economists and commentators to discuss fundamental aspects of macroeconomics and their policy applications.

Prosperity 2030 is an output of the Social Prosperity Network, hosted at the UCL Institute for Global Prosperity under the direction of Co-Chairs Professor Dame Henrietta Moore and Andrew Percy. Building on a decade of research on Universal Basic Services, tax reforms, and structural redesign, it is presented as apolitical and non-partisan, for serious consideration by any government that engages with structural reform.
